Tips on How to Protect Your Retractable Awning in the Winter Months

Want to Make Sure Your Awning is Kept Safe in the Winter?

Many of my Affordable Awnings LLC clients have asked me what the best way is for them to prepare their retractable awning for the oncoming winter months? This is what prompted me to write this post.

Winterizing your awning is a vital part of awning maintenance. While the structure of most awnings is designed to be used all year round, it is still a good idea to prepare yours for the colder months with my tips.

• Heavy frost is a sign that winter is coming, never try to extend your awning while it is covered with frost. Instead, wait until it has melted before you open it. Trying to use it while it is still frozen will damage either the motor or the fabric.
• Before it gets too cold to use your awning, I suggest you give it a thorough cleaning. Using diluted dish soap and a soft-bristle brush, gently clean it and wipe down the frame.
• I also recommend that you remove your awning valance. This will help protect it from wind and other such weather damage.
• Throughout the winter, keep your awning cover and motor clean by removing heavy snow and ice buildups. Water from the melted snow and ice will damage your awning.

Additional Tips

• Clean the fabric or remove any loose dirt – if you wash it, make sure you dry it properly.
• Makes sure your awning is closed securely.
• Unplug your awning. This is not a requirement; however, make sure the remote is put away and cannot be touched by anything.

Remember to keep a close eye on the weather, and prepare your retractable awning for winter to ensure a longer lifespan.
